Neuro-ophthalmological complications associated with HIV infection

HIV infection affects all the systems of human body producing a variety clinical cases, therefore aim this review is to describe main neuro-ophthalmological complications associated with infection. In afferent pathway, there are primary optic neuropathies due direct damage from virus, and secondary ones, caused by opportunistic infections, neoplasms, ischemia, drugs, where presentation varies. On other hand, within efferent pathway supranuclear defects (conjugate gaze disorders, saccadic dysfunction soft eye tracking) cranial nerves III, IV VI palsies. The mediated itself or conditions can occur at any time during disease. All patients should undergo periodic ophthalmological evaluations in order detect these anomalies timely manner mitigate their consequences.

A wide variety of visual sensory and ocular motor problems may occur as a direct result of enlargement of the third ventricle. Four patients are described with optic nerve dysfunction, partial third nerve palsy, proptosis, and Sylvian aqueduct syndrome all resulting from an enlarged third ventricle.
